#WrestlebaeWednesday 3.14.18 | @TheShenom
This weeks Wrestlebae is the first on the road to #Wrestlebaenia. Meet Kayla, a certified bad ass mami who is probably the oldest wrestlebae on my list but she's newer to the realm of wrestling. But this girl KNOWS HER STUFF, okurrr! Kayla gives me rockstar Lita vibes and I love her so much. But back off guys this ones married. Read Kayla's interview after the break.
How did you get into wrestling?
Unfortunately, it didn't involve my childhood. My husband Aaron however grew up around it and despite losing interest over the years, eventually started turning on Raw every Monday night. Usually around that time I'd tune out and do my own thing. A few times I'd be too lazy to turn on my laptop so I'd start to pay attention and it was honestly the drama of it all that roped me in. I've always been a big sucker for theatrics and gigs like that, so I was always asking him why people were so mad at each other-- fast forward a few months and I was keeping up with everything. That was probably mid to late 2013 so I was experiencing The Shield, The Yes Movement and CM Punk. Eventually I picked my faves and actually got invested in the athletic aspects of the entire thing. By the time it was 2014, I was knee deep in it! I remember rolling down to the local K-Mart because they were the only physical retailer that sold WWE merch and picked myself up a Daniel Bryan shirt. Now I have more wrestling shirts than regular shirts and I'm WAYYYYY more into it than my husband is. We went to Mania for the first time last year and a million PPVs! I think the coolest thing we've done is went to a live NXT taping on our honeymoon. Finn Balor was NXT champion and at the end of the night, he came around and took selfies with people. That was the episode Sasha Banks and Bayley signed their Ironwoman Match, if you watch it you can see me and my husband in the second row completely in awe! Such a sick night. Now it's 2018 and I've made honestly made some lifelong friends through this crazy business ( TEAM #WBO ! ).
What is your earliest wrestling memory?
My first ever PPV was the 2014 Royal Rumble. We got invited to a friend's house for a big party because they purchased the PPV ( before the network so you know it's OG ) and it involved food, so I was totally in even though I considered myself a casual wrestling fan. I even bought a CM Punk t-shirt because by that time I was painfully obsessed with him. Everyone did a big money pool for the Rumble match where if you drew the winning number, the money was yours ( we have kept that up as a tradition since )-- I didn't win then but a few years ago I finally did! Obviously, we know the outcome of this particular Royal Rumble. CM Punk left the company right after, never to be seen again. I was C R U S H E D. In retrospect, I wish I had been a little bit more appreciative of Dave Batista winning cause I love that dude now. It's a deadass sad memory but the show must go on.
Your favorite wrestler of all time? (male, female or both)
No chance in hell I could narrow these down to one.
Male- Stone Cold Steve Austin, Razor Ramon and The Undertaker as the classics. New School, I’d go with Seth Rollins, Finn Balor, Cody Rhodes, Pete Dunne.
Female- LITA AND TRISH for my old school girls. Charlotte, Sasha, Becky, Naomi, Asuka, Ruby, Candice Le Rae, Toni Storm, Abbey Laith, Leva Bates.
I stan legends, PLURAL.
Best match of all time?
I’m going to be controversial and pick a newer match just because I know I’ll still agree with this in 10 years. NXT Takeover: Chicago – Pete Dunne vs. Tyler Bate UK Championship match. Those guys SCALPED me with that match. Y’all know I’m Pete’s #1 fan so don’t be surprised at this!
Classic match, Stone Cold vs Bret Hart at Wrestlemania at Wrestlemania 13. Iconic.
If you were a WWE Superstar what would your theme song be?
I know in my heart of hearts that I’d be a heel, so probably something hardass. Madball- Set It Off or I’d go Aleister Black and have them pen me a custom theme.
Best Match Stipulation? (TLC, Steel Cage, etc.)
I will always choose a ladder match solely based on the crazy ass stunts. It’s what got me into wrestling in the first place!. I like Street Fight matches too, especially when they use the elements around them. It can get so brutal!
Best WWE Theme song of all time?
That’s a hard one because my gym playlist is just WWE entrance themes, ha! We Lie We Cheat We Steal for Eddie and Chavo is one of the most fun. Baron Corbin’s ORIGINAL theme was so cool, even though he’s boring.
Seth Rollin’s get me the most hype though.
Come on, if anyone doesn’t say Royal Rumble they are a liar. It’s so interactive and so tense! Wrestling fans live for the unexpected moments.
Fergal Devitt aka Prince Devitt aka FINN BALOR is my all time #1 wrestling boyfriend. Seth Rollins and Pete Dunne are tied for 2nd. Kairi Sane, Sonya Deville, Asuka, Candice Le Rae and Naomi are a small fraction of the ladies I drool over.
Favorite (non-match) WWE moment?
Every time people like Samoa Joe and Paul Heyman get ahold of a mic. I LOVE when people can really work a in-ring promo and give it passion. Really legit mic skills are so hard to find these days.
Have you ever been to a WWE live event? Which? If not, which one would you like to attend?
I’ve been to too many to count. The perks of being an adult I guess! I’m lucky enough to be married to a fellow wrestling fan so we’ve been to everything. Indie shows are my favorite though. Everyone check out promotions like Southern Underground Pro ( @sup_graps ) and OVW and you’ll be seeing some names that’ll eventually make it to NJPW, ROH and NXT. So cool.
F*ck, Marry, Kill: Triple H, Shane McMahon, Brock Lesnar? Explain why.
I do not like these odds at all.
Marry Brock Lesnar cause that dude is from Ohio and is probably just a teddy bear. Eventually divorce Brock to marry Finn Balor.
Kill Shane because I’m indifferent even though he’s kinda foxy. Whatever. He’s useless to me.
F*ck no one because I love myself and want better for myself. Paul can continue to run NXT wonderfully and I’ll be thankful. Maybe I should have married him and banned him from being on TV though. Whatever, retrospect!
